Do you often suffer from a gout attack? There is no doubt that you want to get rid of the pain as soon as possible, but the truth is, you will usually have to be patient enough to be able to wait a while until it clears up. Normally, it can last more than a couple of days. Gout is the result of having great amounts of uric acid in the body particularly in the joints, resulting in joint inflammation. More often than not, the foods you eat and the beverages you drink can either cause gout or prevent it. High purine levels in foods and beverages can increase the presence of uric acid in the body. That is why diets containing high purines usually cause gout attacks. With that being said, you must try your best to watch what you eat and drink daily. You must also reduce consuming foods that can cause gout attacks. Below are some critical foods to avoid with gout or must be taken into small proportions if you find it hard to completely avoid them.
Although fruits are quite healthy for the body, you must take note that some fruits might not be healthy for your joints. Dried fruits can contain high amounts of purines. Speaking of raisins, for every 100g of raisins, around 100mg uric acid is produced. That explains why dried fruits such as raisins should be taken in small proportions only. However, you should bear in mind that in addition to dried fruits, there are also other fruits that have high amounts of purines such as nuts, pineapples and durians. These kinds of fruits should also be avoided or consumed in small proportions.
Just like fruits, there are also vegetables that you must only eat occasionally. Such veggies include dried peas, mushrooms, lentils, beans and asparagus. These veggies have high amounts of purines. That is why you must only eat small proportions of such veggies. In fact, you must only take a maximum of two servings of such veggies each week so that they would not produce any great impact on your system that would encourage the onset of gout attacks.
Alcohol is also one of culprits of gout attacks. It can increase uric acid levels in the body as well. That explains why alcohol consumption should also be reduced to only 2 drinks or less each day. However, it is even better if you can totally stop imbibing alcohol. You should especially limit your beer intake or avoid it completely since it has great amounts of purines.
Sweetened Foods and Beverages
Many every day snacks, drinks and foods contain considerable amounts of fructose, which can lead to an increase in uric acid production in the body. Thus, you should cut down on eating and drinking sweetened foods and beverages, respectively. Fruit juices and sodas are examples of sweetened drinks. Ketchup, jams, cereal bars, frozen pizzas, candies, cakes and biscuits are examples of sugary foods.
